if you're in town august 12, consider checking out baltimore duo wye oak at the 7th street entry. their melancholy and lovely debut album "if children..." was re-released by merge this year (it was originally issued last year by a smaller label under the name monarch). equal parts folk and fuzz, wye oak's music is so modest it can take a few listens to realize just how pretty the songs really are:
wye oak--"please concrete"
(how awesome is what happens at 2:02?)

This band is further proof that WMCN is the best place to find out about new music (hey listeners!) Yeah, 2:02 is one of my favorite unexpected noise onslaughts in any song ever, which is saying a lot.
jesus that is shameless...and so true!!
How was it? Did you go? Are you in Iowa?
it was pretty cool, a bit short but they played a lot of rockin' new tunes. a cool local band called red pens opened. and yeah, i'm back in iowa for a bit.
